Vertical Turbine Pump Maintenance: A Complete Guide

By WTPS Team•February 15, 2024
Industrial pipes and pump equipment in factory

Everything you need to know about maintaining vertical turbine pumps for maximum reliability and efficiency.

Vertical turbine pumps are essential for many water supply, irrigation, and industrial applications. Their unique construction requires specific maintenance approaches different from horizontal centrifugal pumps.

Understanding Vertical Turbine Design

Vertical turbine pumps feature multiple stages of impellers and bowls suspended in a well or sump, driven by a motor at the surface through a long line shaft. This design allows pumping from deep sources but creates unique maintenance challenges.

Line Shaft and Bearings

Lubrication

Water-lubricated and oil-lubricated designs have different requirements. Water-lubricated bearings need clean, cool water flow. Oil-lubricated systems require proper oil level and regular oil changes. Contaminated lubricant accelerates wear.

Shaft Alignment

The line shaft must run true from motor to bowls. Worn bearings allow shaft whip that damages components throughout the pump. Replace bearings before excessive clearance develops.

Bowl Assembly

Impeller Wear

Sand and other abrasives wear impeller vanes and shrouds. Efficiency drops as clearances increase. Inspect impellers during major overhauls and replace worn components.

Bowl Wear Rings

Like horizontal pumps, wear ring clearance affects efficiency. But accessing bowl assemblies requires pulling the entire pump—a significant undertaking. Monitor performance trends to schedule overhauls efficiently.

Discharge Head and Motor

Discharge Head Maintenance

The discharge head contains the stuffing box or mechanical seal, thrust bearings, and driver connection. Maintain proper packing adjustment or seal condition. Check thrust bearing temperature and lubrication.

Motor Care

Hollow shaft motors have thrust bearings that support the entire rotating assembly weight plus hydraulic thrust. These bearings are critical. Monitor temperature and lubricate per manufacturer specifications.

Pulling and Reinstalling

Vertical turbine pump maintenance often requires pulling the entire column assembly. This is a major operation requiring proper equipment and procedures. Protect machined surfaces during handling and ensure proper assembly clearances.
